Initiative Filed for Newport Beach City Hall in the Park
Newport Beach, CA - Today, proponents filed with the Newport Beach City Clerk, a Charter Amendment Initiative to locate the Newport Beach City Hall north of, and adjacent to, the Central Library on a portion of the 12.82 acre parcel which the City owns. The present City Hall, located on the Balboa Peninsula, is in need of replacement because of its poor physical condition, age and it does not effectively serve the community.
“The Newport Beach City Hall should be placed in Newport Center because it makes sense to the taxpayer,” stated local retired architect, and America’s Cup Winner, Bill Ficker. “We believe that the most appropriate location is on a city owned site adjacent to the Central Library. This location would provide a real opportunity to incorporate the City Hall into a synergistic combination with the park and the library, also allowing for shared parking.”
Major proponents who have joined Ficker in support of the Initiative are Marion Bergeson, former California Secretary of Education and our former State Senator, along with Jack Croul, local businessman and long time resident, who was responsible for saving the “Cannery” from demolition.
“The site north of the Central Library has many economical advantages. Because the City owns the land, placing the City Hall on this site could save taxpayers millions of dollars over other options being considered. In addition, there would be no loss of open space because upon demolition of the old City Hall, a park could be created, replacing the acreage used by the new City Hall,” stated Croul.
The Newport Beach City Attorney has fifteen days to provide a Ballot Title and Summary. Signature collection for the Initiative could begin in June, starting a process, leading to the Presidential Primary Election of February 5, 2008.

talking about the location
of a new City Hall. Ugh!!
Marion Bergeson....Bill and
Chuck...and who else wants
to stand in front of various
super markets in NB and beg
for people to buy off on
their "so-called" freeland
for bureaucrats! Give it
up! No cut through road
from the NB transportation
center please! NO additional traffic on Mac Arthur Blvd. please! No
nut case divey up of the
worthless parkland......
Just stop....stop...stop!
Use the Santa Barbara property or just keep the
City Hall where it is! The
end....no stupid vote of
the uninformed for those
with cash! It's totally
ridiculous..even if it did
work...which it doesn't.
It would appear the council has decided to replace the city hall so the only question is where to put it. Ficker's plan for the park site appears to make the most sense at the finance level. A passive park in my day was the weed patch behind my home. Why do we need a weed patch in Newport Center? I would also ask why Mr. Winship holds voters in such contempt? Me thinks because he has been rejected by them several times when on the ballot.
